A former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega, has called for the rescue of Nigeria from greedy political class who he described as unpatriotic, visionless and self-serving.
Jega stated this at the national convention of the People Redemption Party (PRP) which was held in Abuja on Saturday.
The former INEC boss while calling on the newly-sworn members of the National Executive Committee (NEC) to continue to contribute to progress and development of the party said Nigerian politics has been captured and dominated by those who do not mean well for the progress of the country.
He however called for good electoral process which he said is the only way to put good people in elected positions to promote good governance.
He said PRP must do within its powers to rescue power from self-serving politicians to bring hope to the future generation.
“Let us put our energies into building our party and we can also in building our party to contribute to the progress and development in our country. As a registered political party, we have a unique opportunity given the history and the antecedents of this party the Peoples Redemption Party to actually contest and win elections so that we can bring good governance to our country.
“Nigerian politics has been captured and dominated and in fact it is even being destroyed by people who are self-serving, who are not patriotic, who are visionless in terms of how this country can develop and it is very important that we all as members of this progressive party dedicate our efforts to ensuring that the electoral process brings out good people in elected positions in our country.
“That is the only way that we can stop the brigandage the recklessness and the destruction of our country by people who are self serving and who only think of themselves and are not thinking about our children or grandchildren. Let us mobilize, let us enlighten and let us recruit members into our party and let us field good candidates so that we can really begin to change the trajectory of governance from bad to good as we move towards the 2023 elections,” Jega said.
Meanwhile, Mallam Falalu Bello and Comrade Babatunde Alli were returned as the national chairman and national secretary respectively of the PRP through a consensus arrangement presided over by a member of the board of trustees of the party, Alhaji Mustapha Bello. Other elected officials are Mr Stanley Ezeanyaku (national vice chairman, south), Hajia Aisha Dankanni (national vice chairman, north west), Barrister Abdulganiyu Muhammed (national vice chairman, north east), Hon Haruna Buhari (national vice chairman, north central), Hon Kolade Oluwaseun (national vice chairman, south west), Mr Peter Okafor (national vice chairman, south east) and Mr Godwin Akpaidang (national vice chairman, south south).
